The next mode incorporates the Drive control as a master volume – very useful and it never gets buzzy. This is Mode 1 – think the Bassman/Super Lead. The gain and tone knobs work just as you’d expect: leaving the Drive and Power knobs wide open effectively takes them out of the circuit for a control set-up that’s old- school simple. The simple control panel, belying the complexity of sounds available, means that you’ll spend a lot of time playing and not much time figuring it out. Actually, it was more like playing WITH the amp, because there was definitely a partnership developing in no time at all. Playing through the Badger 18 for even just a few minutes certainly leaves you feeling that this is “my” amp and nobody else’s, that there’s no-one else that can make it sound just this way. Instead, Suhr wants to produce amps and pedals that serve a more discerning player – one whose unique voice and character should be served by technology, not diluted by it.
Often, these other amps deliver a usable but generic sound that will always find a place in the broader market. He’s not trying to mass produce his products nor capture any market share away from the “big boys”, who continue to build amps that serve a general need without being too specific.
